About Me

 

My name is Dean Cerin. I am an underwater and landscape/nature photographer based in Slovenia in the vicinity of Ljubljana. To me photography is a means of self-expression and the opportunity to escape to the outdoors from long hours in the office, working as finance professional. It helps me balance my life and recharge my batteries.

The common theme of my photography is closely related to water as it moves continually through the water cycle of evaporation, precipitation, and overland flow until it reaches the sea.

I capture images of nature in Slovenia, the surrounding European countries and some faraway places. I tend to work out the scene extensively to make the very best out of it. Admittedly, that does not make me the most popular dive buddy (when I am underwater) or the most caring husband (on dry land when my wife waits for me patiently to take the” final” shoot way beyond sunset). I also enjoy spending time in the “digital darkroom” to get around the limitations of photographic equipment and make pictures more pleasing.

 

It all started with the underwater photography and not the other way around. I was attracted to the mysteries of the underwater world which has led me to become an underwater photographer. At first, I simply started to document my explorations in deep waters. I was mostly taking snapshots of any animal of the see that would let me come close enough to take a decent picture – from small critters to big ocean inhabitants. Shortly I was hooked. As I could not dive as often as I would like to, I needed to fill the gaps in between dives. So I decided to “follow the water cycle” and use my digital camera to pursue topside photography as well. The obvious choice for me was landscape/nature photography. I believe my photography has improved by applying certain concepts originated in one genre into another and vice versa.

 

I’ve grown as a photographer by reading as many books, and tutorials on the web as I could get my hands on. I am very grateful to numerous excellent photographers around the world who are showcasing their best work on-line. Many of them are generously sharing very useful tips and techniques, which helped me tremendously. Hopefully, someday, someone will find inspiration in my photos too. In this way I may be able to give something in return.
